Sign Research Foundation’s University Workshop Exceeds Expectations

Sign Research Foundation’s first full-day University Workshop, held at Michigan State University earlier this fall, drew a capacity crowd to learn more about signs. The event was sponsored in collaboration with the university’s School of Planning, Design, and Construction and drew professors and students of landscape architecture, planning, and design; campus and facilities planners; and local sign companies and distributors.

A new video, available at http://www.signresearch.org/university-workshops, showcases students learning more about how signs and wayfinding impact the urban environment. In between presentations the group took a field trip to two locations on campus to view examples of interior and exterior signage and get a sneak peek at what they would be required to do in their team challenge later in the workshop.

Following the field trip, a final presentation was given on the materials and methods used during sign fabrication. After the final presentation, the students received hands-on learning exploring sign material samples provided by the industry participants.

“One of the highlights was putting together students, professors and sign professionals to explore opportunities for solutions right there on the campus,” said Sapna Budev, SRF’s executive director. “The group presentations were innovative and inspiring and showed just how students can incorporate this type of experiential learning into a more fully evolved understanding of the industry, our products and their importance.”

The presentations are linked at SRF’s website, http://www.signresearch.org/university-workshops/.

The University Workshops are just one aspect of SRF’s mission of furthering understanding about the sign industry. The National Sign Research & Education Conference (NSREC) will co-locate with ISA International Sign Expo 2018 and will be held March 21st in Orlando. Learn more at www.signresearch.org/nsrec.
