Increasing government regulations around indoor air quality in passenger vehicles and more stringent automotive OEM standards are driving demand
for a new generation of globally available, low volatile organic compound (VOC) thin attachment solutions. To help design engineers meet these growing global requirements, 3M has added two new products to its global portfolio of high performance, low-VOC tape solutions.
Making their debut at WardsAuto Interior Conference on May 11, 2016 at Cobo Center in Detroit, Mich., 3M™ Low VOC Scrim Reinforced Adhesive Transfer Tape 98010LVC and 3M™ Double Coated Tissue Tape 99015LVC provide superior bonding and dimensional stability on a variety of high surface energy (HSE) and low surface energy (LSE) substrates commonly found in automotive interior applications such as open and closed cell foams,
elastomeric materials that are used in gaskets, seals and various attachment applications.
Developed to expand design freedom and thinking, these tapes have been created to meet the established target values for nine substances with defined limits for vehicle indoor air quality measured by The Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA). They are also designed to meet the requirements for The German Association of Automotive Industry’s test method, VDA 278, by which VOC and FOG total emissions are measured.
These highly engineered tapes are designed for automotive interior bonding and provide excellent dimensional stability during lamination, making them ideal for automotive applications such as door bolsters and pillars, headliners, seats, instrument panels, ventilation ducts, armrests and center consoles.
- 3M™ Low VOC Scrim Reinforced Adhesive Tape 98010LVC is a 3.9 mil (0.10 mm) low-VOC scrim reinforced transfer tape that provides good dimensional stability for large-area lamination
- 3M™ Low VOC Double Coated Tissue Tape 99015LVC is a 5.9 mil (0.15 mm) low-VOC double coated tape with tissue carrier for ease of handling during lamination and excellent die-cutting characteristics.
“As we look to expand our reach to automotive OEM’s, tier suppliers and our converter partners, we discovered an opportunity to develop a new line of innovative, low emission, thin attachment tapes,” said Chad Henke, global business development manager, 3M™ Industrial Adhesives & Tapes Division. “Our global experience and partnerships across the automotive value chain will enable design engineers to focus on the fit and finish of the interior, instead of the emission contents of their components.”
