Delcam & Bloodhound Launch “Design a Plaque” Student Competition

Delcam and Bloodhound SSC are running a competition for students to design the brass plaques to be presented to schools supporting the project. The students who produce the winning designs using Delcam’s ArtCAM software will each receive an invitation to watch the Bloodhound SSC test run in Cornwall in 2015, together with an adult companion, prior to the attempt to set a new world land speed record of 1,000 miles per hour in South Africa in 2016. For more information on Bloodhound visit http://www.delcam.com/bloodhound/index.asp.

The competition is separated into three education segments, with primary school pupils designing the plaque for Bloodhound Schools, secondary school students creating a plaque for Bloodhound Teaching Schools, and college and sixth-form students competing to produce the plaque for Bloodhound Hubs.  The three winning designs will be manufactured onto brass plaques awarded to every Bloodhound Hub, Teaching School and Bloodhound School in the UK in recognition of their involvement with the Bloodhound SSC Education Programme.  Full details of the competition are at www.delcam.com/bloodhound/competitions or at www.bloodhoundblast.com.

Entrants in all three categories will use Delcam’s ArtCAM artistic CADCAM software to create 3D designs for their plaques.  The software is available for free download from the www.artcam.com/education Web site.  A guide to installing and using ArtCAM can be downloaded together with a range of clipart that can be used as the basis of the design.  Tutorial videos on the use of the software can either be downloaded or viewed online.

All students taking part will submit their entries as ArtCAM files to their teachers.  The teachers will then submit a design from their schools to Bloodhound and Delcam to decide upon a winner.  The closing date for entries is Monday, June 30, 2014.

Delcam is both an SME Sponsor and a Product Sponsor of Bloodhound SSC.  The company is supporting the project with its manufacturing software and expertise, and has already produced some components for the record-breaking vehicle in its Advanced Manufacturing Facility.  Several Delcam customers and technical partners are also involved in using the company’s CADCAM software to manufacture parts for the ultimate jet- and rocket-powered racing car.
