HP is bringing design to life today at WantedDesign 2013, showcasing the possibilities of digital printing for interior décor with the HP Lounge and HP Custom Wallcoverings Workshop.
HP digital printing technology opens new avenues for unique expression, such as custom wallcoverings, curtains, table graphics, lampshades, decorative textiles, ceiling tiles, flooring, and wood. The HP Lounge is comprised of pieces imagined by world-renowned designer Karim Rahid created using HP Latex and UV printing technology.
“Among the design community, digital printing is growing rapidly due to its ability to provide immediacy and personalization,” said Karim Rashid. “I can print an entire floor and even have my clients walk on it before we actually complete the final interior. This technology is a beautiful way to make new work and radical ideas come to life.”
The HP Custom Wallcoverings Workshop will include HP experts providing hands-on instruction on how to take designs from inception to creation through digital printing. Wallcoverings in the workshop will be created using workstations equipped with AVA or HP WallArt software, a variety of wallcovering materials and the HP Designjet L26500 Printer. Additionally the workshop will feature guest designers discussing their custom wallcoverings each day from 2:00-3:00 p.m., including:
+ Marc Thorpe, principal architect and industrial designer for Marc Thorpe Design, on Saturday, May 18;
+ George Venson, designer and owner of Voutsa, on Sunday, May 19; and
+ Jill Malek, graphic designer and owner of Jill Malek Wallpaper, on Monday, May 20.
The HP Custom Wallcoverings Workshop will be open May 18-20 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET at WantedDesign, located at Terminal Stores – The Tunnel.
“Interior designers are constantly looking for new ways to express their creativity and provide a one-of-a-kind space for their clients,” said Xavier Garcia, vice president and general manager, Large Format Production & Industrial Division, HP. “HP digital printing technology helps users to create custom wallcoverings and a variety of interior décor, delivering more opportunities for unique design than ever before.”
For experienced designers, HP partner AVA supplies computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) solutions, including the AVA raster image processor (RIP) for file preparation in addition to enhanced color management. With AVA design and file preparation software, designers can create repeated patterns with improved color management as well as accurate screen-to-print color matching.
For a simplified process, the HP WallArt Solution provides an easy-to-use, cloud-based web service for design, visualization and production of custom wallcoverings (note: requires an HP WallArt account, Internet connection and connected Internet-capable device.). Requiring no special software or infrastructure support, the HP WallArt Solution is an intuitive design tool that enables users to enter precise wall dimensions and easily work around windows and doors.
Designers can also render realistic visualizations of wallcoverings using their own content for backgrounds, objects and text with advanced image quality as well as scaling features.
At WantedDesign, the HP WallArt Solution will be run on the world’s first twenty-seven-inch all-in-one workstation, the HP Z1. Built with designers in mind, the Z1 comes standard with Intel Xeon processors for fast rendering and NVIDIA Quadro graphics. The HP Z1 Workstation offers a twenty-seven-inch in-plane switching (IPS) LED backlit display and supports more than 1 billion colors.
In the HP Custom Wallcoverings Workshop, HP will produce wallcoverings live on the HP Designjet L26500 Printer. This system has been tested with a variety of wall décor media, including embossed, coated and uncoated, non-woven, vinyl and paper substrates. The printer uses water-based HP Latex Inks to produce prints ideal for residential, healthcare and other sensitive environments.
