To promote their upcoming superhero movie Ant-Man, Marvel Studios has quietly been placing tiny, ant-sized billboards (less than a foot high) in various public places around Australia. A few Redditors over the weekend noticed these Ant-Man billboards at bus stops, parks, and atop trash cans.
The Ant-Man billboards are reportedly insanely detailed and even have battery-powered LED lights to be seen nighttime.
So far, they only seem to be located in Australia (there have been sightings in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Queensland), but hopefully they’ll expand this mini-marketing campaign to the rest of the world. If you’re thinking about stealing one though, people who’ve spotted them have said that it’s attached pretty firmly to whatever it’s been placed on, likely with some kind of epoxy adhesive.
The studio pulled similar stunts in January when it released the film’s first poster—all-white save a termite-sized picture of the hero—as well as a microscopic teaser trailer.
Marvel has some work ahead of them to get audiences interested in Ant-Man, who doesn’t have much of a connection to the larger universe, but that recent trailer and this little stunt are a great first step.
The movie, which opens July 17, stars Paul Rudd as a petty criminal turned size-shifting superhero. Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, and Corey Stoll also co-star.
