Modern Artifacts, creators of industrial, three-dimensional neon sculptures has moved into a new studio and gallery space in Scappoose, Oregon—just outside Portland. “It’s a great space,” said Jeff Meyers, founder of Modern-Artifacts.com. “Not only is it a creative space but we have room to display our biggest pieces—there’s even room for my motorcycles.”
One of the first projects undertaken in the new 2,200-square foot studio was the creation of new designs specific to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, being held August 13-16, where Modern Artifacts will be displaying for the first time this year.
“I’ve always been a sports car nut,” continued Meyers, “and having the opportunity to let my imagination run wild on entirely new designs evoking those glory days of sports car racing in the fifties and sixties has been a lot of fun—it’s almost like building a time machine.
“I got into it when racercaster.com commissioned me to create a one-off piece to promote their Spotter app that provides full itinerary, announcements, and real time updates for professional and amateur race car drivers as well as spectators.”
The first piece Jeff created depicts a typical fifties roadster special that might have raced Pebble Beach or other west coast tracks. The second piece will be a tribute to the distinctive silhouette of sixties racecars. And, finally, there’s the classic Race Track entrance sign.
“I’m excited to have our artwork on display at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion,” said Meyers. “It proves that neon is as alive and thriving as well as American historic racing.”
