According to Mt. Airy News, Mt. Airy, North Carolina City Manager Darren Lewis has announced a $45,000 wayfinding signage grant from the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Rural Community Capacity program.
The Rural Community Capacity program provides grants and other assistance to local governments in rural and distressed areas. Tourism has increased in downtown Mount Airy, driving the need for more signage.
Wayfinding signage was identified as a top priority among local needs arising from a “Vision” committee initiative in 2021 which explored downtown, economic-development and other issues.
“It is our goal to try to have the signs ready for installation after the first of the year,” the city manager told Mt. Airy News. “We are finalizing design and will be prepared to place the order soon.”
Lewis indicated that much thought has been devoted to the process.
“We anticipate placing these signs strategically throughout the Municipal Service District with a priority on tourist attractions, public restrooms and public parking,” he says. “Also, they will be directing tourists to visit the side streets.”
