One of the sign industry’s top struggles is finding and retaining workers—especially younger workers. In fact, according to a recent survey conducted by Sign Builder Illustrated, 50% of sign shops named “finding/hiring new workers” as one of their biggest challenges.
In this on-demand webinar as part of our “On the Floor” educational webinar series, we speak with Thomas Lamont of the U.S. Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (Valley Tech) and Stephanie Poyant Moran of Poyant Signs about the ways in which they are helping to attract young talent to the sign industry.
Lamont, a successful sign maker himself, has been teaching students about the art and technologies of the sign trade at Valley Tech for over seven years. Since joining the school in 2014, he has transformed their curriculum and technical offerings in the Painting & Design Technology program with an infusion of more modern equipment and techniques.
Sign Manufacturing Day, sponsored by the International Sign Association in conjunction with the National Association of Manufacturers, is in its 9th year and has been a major way students are exposed to the sign industry. Held annually on the first Friday in October, companies in the sign, graphics, and visual communications industry host facility tours to encourage high school and vocational school students to explore exciting and diverse career opportunities within the industry.
As the director of Sales Operations at Poyant, fourth-generation Poyant Moran is no stranger to the struggles of staffing. Since the beginning, Poyant has been participating in Sign Manufacturing Day as a way to introduce local students to the sign industry and its business, and the sign company has even hired a few workers and interns as a result of the event.
